Antebellum period (1784-1860)
Toward the beginning of the antebellum period diseases such as: malaria, smallpox, yellow fever, typhoid, typhus, scarlet fever, diphtheria, measles, and polio were common. Due to the unsanitary conditions of those living at the time many of these diseases had the opportunity to be easily spread. The rapid spread of disease allowed for the need of physicians who would ultimately be useless because of their lack of knowledge which only aided in the spread of disease and infection. Around the time disease had been reached it’s peak new inventions had been made and new institutions where doctors and women making their way into the healthcare field could be taught.
