Newark boys sent to france
In 1885 Newark, New Jersey, four boys were bitten by a rabid dog. A fundraising effort arose to help send the boys to France for treatment by Pasteur. Donors raised $1,000, which sent the boys overseas to France. The healthy boys returned home in January 1886 after treatment with the new rabies vaccine. The long incubation period of the rabies virus gave the boys enough time to travel thousands of miles for the post-exposure vaccination.
