first live attenuated bacterial vaccine
Cholera is an infection of the small intestine which can cause severe diarrhea and dehydration and between 1817 and 1849 there were a record number of cases of chicken cholera. At the time not much was known about disease but in 1877 Louis Pasteur developed the ‘The Germ Theory of Disease’ which offered insight into symptoms of bacterial diseases. His theory set the base for his later development of a cure for chicken cholera.Several years after the chicken cholera epidemic had slowed down Louis Pasteur developed the first live attenuated bacterial vaccine (1879) and it was the cure for cholera. When Pasture was testing his hypothesis he used fresh cultured samples of the bacteria until the chickens were cured.This was a major step into the future because up until this point all vaccines that had been created killed the pathogen.
