POLIO EPIDEMIC OF 1916
In 1916 the amount of recorded cases of polio was at a maximum and although many people had drastically improved their hygiene since the mid-1800’s many were still infected with polio. Since polio is a viral disease it can easily be spread by being in contact with a person suffering from disease. The signs of polio are not clear in the beginning stages but several months after the victim had been affected the symptoms would become clear. A well- known symptom of polio was paralysis and although it did not occur in every case it was still a possibility. In the cases where paralysis was to occur the infectee would begin to feel weak and unable to move their body due to the infection of their spinal cord fluid. Due to the lack of medical knowledge people that were infected with polio had to endure the pain until the cure was eventually found in 1952 by Dr. Jonas Salk.
