Yellow Fever Cripples the Mississippi Valley
Memphis Mississippi became one of the deadliest cities in 1878 because of yellow fever killing almost half its population. The mayor of Memphis decided to quarantine the state to stop the spread. Sadly the quarantine did not work and instead increased the number of infected from 25,000 to 27,000. Although the people of medicine knew the source of the disease, mosquitoes, they were misinformed on how to avoid being bitten. Due to the climate of mississippi there was an abundance of mosquitoes being born and those that were bitten did not take the quarantine and ended up being the reason for the spread of yellow fever. This artifact is a newspaper clipping informing the towns people of the crisis
