Yellow fever vaccine
Yellow fever is a tropical viral disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes that affects the liver and kidneys; yellow fever tends to result in death and jaundice.
In 1936 Max Theiler and his colleagues developed a live attenuated vaccine for yellow fever vaccine, much like chicken cholera vaccine. By using tissue cultures from embryonic chicken egg Theiler was able to create many subcultures of yellow fever until he found ‘17D’ which was used and the official vaccine. Although Theiler had created a vaccine for yellow fever in 1936 the first human trial of the vaccine was in 1937, almost a year later. After the vaccine was determined as effective it was able to be easily mass produced late in 1937.
