THe iron lung
The iron lung , previously known as the Drinker respirator, was used to assist paralyzed polio victims with their breathing. In certain forms of polio paralysis was possible and for those whose diaphragms and intercostal muscle were incapable of contracting the iron lung was necessary for survival. In 1920’s the iron lung was needed by approximately 15% of the overall polio infected population but only 1,200 polio victims were able to access the machine due to the cost. Due to the high demand of the machine in 1939 National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis began mass distribution of iron lung.
