Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell
In 1849 Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to obtain a medical degree in the United States. Dr. Blackwell attended New York's Geneva Medical College, where she went to get her degree in gynecology. After graduating from Geneva Medical College Dr. Blackwell started a practice in New York City but due to the prejudice of fellow doctors she decided to work in clinics in London and France, instead of continuing her practice here. Dr. Blackwell became very successful and is responsible for helping many other women who were interested in nursing by opening her own infirmary in 1857. Her infirmary was established to show women that they could make advancements in the medical field just as men had done.
