Antitoxin Production in the United States
Through the late 1800’s and throughout most of the 1900’s many people were infected with diphtheria and although a significant amount of adults were infected an even larger amount of children fell victim. As the symptoms of diphtheria were understood many started to see why children were so susceptible. Because of childrens weak immune system it was easy for them to catch the disease through germs in the air. Due to all of the child death in 1894 companies started to mass produce anti toxins and required them to be administered to small children. The production of this U.S anti-toxin was late because the U.S had not yet experienced such a record number of cases in children.
