Smallpox epidemic
In early 1925 there was a smallpox epidemic in Milwaukee and 87 of the 386 infected people died; the remaining of the 386 infected had previously been vaccinated. This caused a statewide panic and state officials began to question the smallpox vaccine. Dr. Merle French was the Superintendent of the Communicable Diseases Hospital in Milwaukee the year of the smallpox outbreak. With the help of Dr. French the health workers of Milwaukee performed over 400,000 vaccinations and those that did not receive vaccinations were forced into quarantine to prevent the spread of disease.
